Just make the Gold portion of the coin A Star. Different sizes for different denominations. That way you can adjust the weight of the coin so it remain the same and works in vending machines.

Or the polymer notes Australia uses--I hear those are very durable too. Then again, they found some way to replace their dollar notes with coins
Yes, our friends in Oz do know better! My friend from NSW let me play with his poly money when he came to visit back in May. Very durable and impossible to wrinkle! Amazing!

You are close on the "weird contract" thing though- it is called having Kennedy and Kerry as the two Senators who represent the state that is the home of the exclusive supplier of paper to the BEP, Crane Paper Co.
The fact that we have not moved to polymer notes and eliminated the one dollar bill should be enough evidence for every Doubting Thomas out there that the lobbyists are in control our government.

You might be able to fit a "10" and an eagle's beak on that coin.
Eagle's beak! I love it!

I sure hope it catches on. I love the new coins.

There's this pretty amazing coin-holder that Canadians have been using for all their coins called Portsou™. It holds about 8 Presidential coins plus .25ct / .05 / .10 and pennies.

Check it out http://www.portsou.com/home_us.htm

I look at this as the mint has failed once again to circulate dollar coins. I wish the pres collection would end and they would put the ikes back in or something

Yesterday, I got a pocketfull (17) of $1 coins (mostly the pres. coins) from a rail ticket dispenser.
I have to say that any more than say 5 becomes rather awkward.
So I'm beginning to think they could be slightly smaller, like the diameter of the AUS $1. (25mm vs 27mm) Then again, that machine could've given me larger bills, and 3 $1 coins, lol.

I am in the UK and I have told people (Brits, Europeans, South Africans) about the issues that the US is having with getting people to use the dollar coin instead of the note.

Their first reply always is that you need to elimate the choice.

I show them the various US dollars and they really don't like the President dollars or the front of Susan B.

They like the size, color, weight, and the reverse of the Susan B. The reverse they say represents America quite well. They feel if you could put a good front on Susan B, it would be a nice coin.

The Peace and Morgan dollars they like but say they are too large & heavy to carry a bunch around.

I was talking to friend in Toronto yesterday and the conversation led to the dollar coin; how they love theirs while we shun ours. She said that it never would have worked had they kept the paper equivalent; to which I agreed. I also told her about the use of our baby dollars in Ecuador.

Yesterday, I convinced a Canadian to take a dollar coin back to Canada instead of a bill back home. I told him, "You don't want a dollar coin?" He said, "You still have them? I thought the Americans hated them." I said, "We do, but we still have them. Which one did you want?" He couldn't make up his mind between James Monroe, Susan B. Anthony, and John Adams so I gave him Sacagawea. Kind of fitting since he was going on a journey.

Someone should hold a huge protest rally at the corporate headquarters of Crane & Co.

I just dont like the fact of carrying change b/c I hate having a bunch of stuff in my pocket! If I spend cash at a store the first thing I do with the change is put in a container as soon as I get to the car

With the exchange rate what it is at the moment, feel free to send me all those nasty $1 notes and I will send you back all the Aussie $1 coins you want, just cross out Australia and write in America and no problems.
Rest in Peace

Maybe the US Mint is trying to get as much "Bang for their Buck"... They may have a plan in effect to stop minting the dollar note in affect, but since there are so many already printed and in still good condition, they may be waiting for that optimimal year to phase out the dollar note.
