One of our local dealers (about 1,000 kilometres away) is currently selling these new microscopes to coin collectors for the purpose having photos of the coin via your pc. It can capture still images and has 5x optical lens. It can also enlarge from 26 to 130 times at VGA resolution on a 14 inch monitor or larger. Now the big question does anyone know of them and are they worth the money (about AUD $225 + $10 post)? regards

Did they give a make/model? In the states, we have a USB microscope called the Digital Blue QX5, which has 10X, 60X, and 200X (optical) magnification. I find that 60X is more than adequate for capturing things like overdates and die cracks. This particular scope sells for under USD $100 in the US, and a similar price in Canada. A lot of collectors on CCF use them and are generally happy with the results. Here's an example of a capture from my QX5:

Where did you get it, Kurt? I am sure I can find more info about those online. I didn't even know they existed!

I got it here. I can recommend this e-tailer. Good price, quick shipping!

you can find the QX-5 and QX-3 on ebay allot of times cheaper than online stores, so if you are not concerned about buying on ebay you may want to check that out as well when you do the searching

G'day IC, look at Item number: 220180615888 on ebay. Sounds a lot like what you are discussing. I'm in Darwin, so I don't expect to be able to look at one of these any time soon. But the shop is near my sister's home, so next time I visit her, I hope to have a look. I've just joined my local Camera Club, so at our next meeting, I intend to ask if anyone else has experienced one of these, or similar. What I have learned so far is that coin photography is best with optical zoom, not digital. My Canon is described as "10x digital zoom, and 3x optical zoom". I can take good pics at 3x, but above that, they are very blurry. You see the item on ebay talks about "130 magnification", and "5x optical zoom". I know just enought to be confused, so I will be interested to read what others contribute to this thread. Peter in Darwin, Oz

Hi Peter Thomas, I thought I could pick the accent. I have placed a bid on ebay for a similar model and should have it soon (next month or so). When I receive it I hope to post more details and if it is half as good as I think it will be I will be as happy as the proverbial pig in ****. regards

I've got the QX3. Have had it for years.
As mentioned the 60X is more than adequate. I believe the lighting is better on a QX5.
A great "toy" and reasonably priced.

xshift, Are you saying the minimum is 100x and it won't be good for putting coins on forums? Thanks

The QX3 is an old version that was manufactured by Intel and the newer QX5 is now manufactured by a company called Digital Blue

Murty.. right, the 100x is just TOO magnified. I figure the 40x minimum I just got should be a ton better (on top of being able to see through a viewer as well as a computer cam - it has both, and the 100x minimum doesn't. That doesn't matter to some, though). I should have looked into the QX5 first, as it looks like it has a 10x, which was what I really wanted to begin with.

Here's my first real attempt at the lowest setting (40x) on this microscope, just to give an idea of the kind of pics it takes. It's the 4 in "1941" on a Lincoln Cent: If I got much closer I'd be able to see the verdigris smiling at me (yikes)! The specific model is Celestron 44320 Microscope Digital Kit MDK.
