sel_69l Bedrock of the Community Australia 21786 Posts	Posted 05/20/2019 6:57 pm No longer a numismatic item, complete loss of coin design leads me to think if it was based on a genuine Half Eagle in the first place. Weight has to be known, along with fineness. As it is, the buyer just has to believe that it was indeed based on a Half Eagle. It must be remembered that all dates of U.S. gold coins have been copied. There remains the possibility that this piece may well be based on a 9ct or 14ct jeweler's copy. Before the engraving it would have had almost a quarter oz of gold about $318. It probably didn't lose enough weight to take the bullion value down to what it sold for.
