Here are two pics, one I did the best I could to show you what I am seeing in a trace of the area. I am off I am sure, as I am not very tech savvy and my hand drawing with a mouse isn't the steadiest. Coop its not the 48 as the 4 is straight and the 4 on the 48 is angled a little counter clockwise. fortcollins, the horizontal bar is above the horizontal bar on the 9 and is fairly close in proximity to the 9. Its not terribly expensive to have it attributed so I am going to send it off Tuesday. If nothing else, I will know for sure then.

The last picture looks like a 3 hidden in there. I hope it is that would be awesome.

Of all the round topped last digits of the forties, 40, 42, 43, 48, 49, in my opinion the only one that the OP coin does NOT match closely is the 43. The other 4 digits have a rather large arch at the top, the 43 has a relatively short more pointed arch. Dan

Dan, I can tell you this for sure, my old eyes have fooled me more than once. It's a curious cent that I'll let the experts have the last say on. It's going in the mail Tuesday.

We all wish you luck, though I still think you're imagining something that isn't there. Hope I'm wrong!

Coinfrog, that's why I'm sending it off, my old eyes aren't that good. I am not trying to fool myself and have my hopes through the roof because I just don't believe something like this can happen this far removed from being minted.

Just playing devils advocate. If you are on the fence, a positive outcome will be great. I also hope it's genuine.

Actually Dan, I truly think the answer will be either inconclusive or no.

Hard to believe this would bring big money even with a tentative nod from Dr. Wiles. The grading services might be reluctant to slab it because of the potential liability.

Thanks Tunnioc. My eyes are not to be trusted and I don't have the equipment or knowledge to absolutely identify this thing.
