(Re-posting because I wrote far beads when I meant near). I see all over the internet that this is a variety to look out for, so I was really excited when I actually found one coin roll hunting in America. Then I found a second, and just now a third... Now I'm wondering if this variety is even rare at all. What's the consensus here? Is this a coin you save

Here you go. All three of my near bead varieties with a far bead (lower right) for comparison.

Use the search box, lots of info. The near beads seem to get more attention but the far beads seem to have a lower mintage...I think. John1

Hey John, would you say either is worth setting aside, or are they just two common varieties of a common coin?

Thankfully my "Official Whitman Folder" does NOT separate the two in the folder, so I never studied much about the 1983's cents.
However, I DO have vacant spots in my specimen and proof binders for the "Far Beads" versions. Maybe in reality there are no such coins, as I've been struggling for years to find them.......in ANY price or grade.
Going by just this, I figure the "far bead" variety is the tougher of the two.

I find more far than near and I seem to keep more near but only if in real nice condition. I don't think there is much of a premium for either unless in higher grade. John1

PS: I just checked my Charlton catalogue and now I'm confused. The pricing for the "Near Beads" is listed HIGHER than the "Far Beads" type in the circulated, uncirculated, and specimen versions. I also just checked my Whitman folder: my 1983 cent is a "Near Bead". The specimen and proof cents I have are both "Near Beads" also. So if the "Nears" are priced higher, how come I can't find any "Far"s?

I have 6 unchecked rolls of 1983's, pulled from circulation in Canada during the 80's (3 rolls mostly red, 3 mostly brown, brown). Since there were so many of each in circulation at the time, no one even bothered to roll them separately. I can have a look through them and if any one wants a red pair of both, send me a private message. I've been buying and selling on ebay since 2000 (tigert [4577]). I sold a pair on ebay before for a $1 + $1 s/h, but with the fees it's no longer worth listing there.
