Here are just a couple random questions I have?

1.) When you go to garage sales and ask for coins, how many of them say they have some?

2.) What do they usually have and are prices usually too high or too low?

3.) Do you ever ask banks that you aren't a member of for loose Ikes or half dollars?

4.) Do they tell you that you need an account?

5.) How about credit unions?

1) Not very often for me
2) that varies but I dont think that there will be many people offering to show a stranger their PF68 1804 dollar. You will probably find wheaties and some silver coin. Which is still reaLLY COOL! Prices also vary some peoople think there wheaties are worth the same as the previously mentioned 1804 dollar, some people think there wheaties are just old ugly pennies.
3)75% of the banks I go to when CRH'ing I do not belong to. Out of that 75% only 5% of the time they tell me I need an account. The other 95% of the time the beautiful tellers ladies just smile at me and pour all there silver coin into my pockets!
5) I have been denied at every credit union I have gone to. I don't even waste my time anymore.

Hope this helps!

Here are some not-so-random answers...

1) I have never successfully found coins at a yard or garage sale. However, I have not been to one in several years now. That might change.

2) See #1.

3) Not recently. Several years ago, I had great success with my girlfriend's bank in scoring customer wrapped rolls with a lot of silver and older dates.

4) See #3. Did I mention that the girlfriend was a teller at that bank?

5) I belong to a credit union and always have. For several years, it only existed "on paper" with a small "branch" in my dad's office building. That said, finds were few and far between. By the time they became a full fledged Credit Union in their own building, my CRH interest had waned. However, I am thinking of starting up again just to see what they might have.

After some quality comments, a few totally random thoughts*

1.) They better have coins, because I never bring exact change.

2.) Garage sales often expect more for anything considered "antique". That includes a circa 1970 Mr. Coffee. So if you buy tarnished SBAs from someone who's seen every Antiques Roadshow, you're gonna pay extra.

3.) I find I can ask any bank as long as I made a "want list" in advance. It really helps the tellers to have it written down, and they usually give me more than I ever need. Nice places, banks.

*Sorry, enough clowning around...I'm usually helpful here, just having fun. Good luck!

1. I always ask. Not always but the times that there was coins I had some fantastic luck. I've found that if there is only one person selling and they would have to go into a house for the coins, they might say come back later of just no. I've gone back to some that said no if I saw more people there and again asked for any old coins. I get to be a pest at times.
2. So far my experiences are the people that have garage/yard/estate sales have no idea of coin prices and I've come away with some fantastic deales.
3. I have accounts in 5 banks. I find I can get all the half dollars I want as long as I ask at a time when they are not busy. The tellers usually have to leave their station, lock up everything, go to a vault to get those so if busy they may well say they don't have any. I usually get about 2 to 10 rolls every few weeks. Never any luck in anything valuable but just fun spending them since most people don't know what they are. And as to Ikes, when I ask I am told to put my name on a list.
4. See 3.
5. Never been to one and not sure where there are any.

vince,

I think you are looking in all good places for return on your investment or just a good deal for your collection. I suggest 6.) Doing all the above, and you will find something worthwhile.

Oh there was a thread on here earlier we were talking about taking icecream, donoughts and the like to bank tellers for our graditude (and we scratch their back, they scratch ours) anyway I was talking to an old friend who has been collecting since he was 10, became a dealer and past it on to his son. He said buy the tellers a box of Chocolates and they will love us...Give a little and get a little. Good luck vince!
