Hi,
my father passed away recently and I always knew he liked coins even though I was the collector in the family. I went to make myself a tea yesterday and I spotted something that didn't look right in a mug of spare change. I fished it out, looked up the writing around the rim and found a post on this site about gold florins.

I know nothing about them and haven't found much on the web so I'd really appreciate any advice or thoughts anyone has about the coin, its authenticity, and what time period it might be from. I found it raw, the 2x2 is mine.
Thank you!

Its diameter is just under 2cm and weighs 3.4g (that's as accurate as my scales get).
Thanks for the link! I'll see what I can find there

Almost looks like plating that is wearing off.

I agree: It appears to be gold plated brass, similar in metal appearance to a gold plated guinea denominated gambling chip.
Thickness of the core is adjusted to match the weight of a Florentine Florin [Florence (Italy), the City where the well respected gold trading coin got it's name from] ~ 3.5 grams.

Looks to be much too circular to be characteristic for a coin struck by the hammer method. Instead, it appears the be blanked out of rolled strip, before being pressed in the same way, as with a modern coin.

I agree this looks like a modern reproduction.

The lettering is a poor imitation of the gothic lettering on a real florin with this design.

Before wondering what kind of coin you have, take it to a jeweler -- most have a non-destructive test to determine if it's even made of gold.

XRF will not help in this case if it is strongly suspected that it is gold plated, because XRF only looks at the surface.
