2011 25th Anniversary Silver Eagle Set

dave92029 Valued Member United States 165 Posts	Posted 06/24/2019 12:54 am Question: to grade or not to grade I have two complete sets of the 2011 25th Anniversary Silver Eagle sets. The P and S coins can be very valuable and the other three: Unc; Burnished, Proof are not so valuable. I was thinking of only sending in the two S and two P eagles for grading, but I'm not sure how that would effect the value/ ability to sell the three other coins in each set. The cost of grading, shipping and insurance makes it hard to justify the added expense on the Unc. Burnished and proof coins. The S and P coins even at a grade 69 are valuable, and the chance that I might get a 70 is what is driving this question. A) Should I break up the sets and submit only the S & P for grading? B) send all ten coins in for grading? C) just sell the sets in the US Mint packaging and not grade any of the coins? Thanks for your assistance. Report this Post to the Staff

Big-Kingdom Pillar of the Community United States 1667 Posts	Posted 06/24/2019 12:23 pm Really Up to you on what you want to do. in the end it's really just those two couns being $300-$400 maybe on the bay "IF" they get a MS70 If they come back 69s though, I don't think it would be worth the costs, we'd be talking about $100-$150 each, maybe $200 on a good day. The entire set at 70 sold at like $750 a couple days ago on the bay, I'd guess most of that was those two coins themselves. I'm not seeing the real value of spending the money to get any of them graded and slabbed, the chance of them coming back 70 is really slim in general I think, which is why I say, "up to you really" I think you could probably sell the whole set for $500-$600 complete, raw. and not spend the time and the money on grading hoping for a PR70 that may not happen. online sellers in general have the sets for about $525-$600 or so raw. You'd probably have to come in on ebay just below their price for a quick sale. One vendor has a sale on it at $525, if they lower their stock levels their price will likely increase again, and then would be a better time to sell and make a little more money. Hard for me to justify the grading fees for a gamble at a 70 grade. most of the value of the set gets eaten up if they come back 69. it cost $299.95 when they came out. If you got yours at that price point, $500-600, maybe even $650 at the right time is a nice little profit without losing it getting greedy on grading and fingers crossed. Just my humble opinion though, totally your decision to make. just hate to see people burn up possible profits on grading fees for a chance of getting a top grade back. I am tempted by the the possibility of a 70 grade, but common sense keeps me coming back to your suggestion of selling the entire ungraded sets. I purchase five sets back in 2011, and immediately sold three of the five. I realized enough on those sales, that the two sets that I now have are at no cost. I also tried to select the most attractive coins from the five sets to keep so there may be a 70 in the group that I have. That's why I'm tempted to get them graded. Big-Kingdom Pillar of the Community United States 1667 Posts	Posted 06/24/2019 2:29 pm Well then if that's the situation might be best to wait for the right time to sell them, both of your ungraded sets for maximum you can get, then buy an already graded set of 70s for yourself to keep. And pocket the leftover couple hundred if it's all free at this point. Let someone else gamble on the grading and get you that one perfect set. There's a 70 set on there now for $749.95 obo. Seems like you could get the whole set for $700-$750 in 70s and pocket the left over couple hundred. Might be the way to go here if your interested in having 70s for yourself. Obviously the coins unique to the set will get the label but the others may not. If the others wouldn't get the label there's little upside and I would just send in the unique ones.
