So we had this auction...

US COIN 1908 GOLD DOUBLE EAGLE ANACS GRADED BU MS64 $20

end a few nights ago.

I go to my Sellathon statistics and find that it had 784 hits, 204 of which are from a direct search.

So I go to see what words were searched to find this listing. Here is the chart....

http://www.coincommunity.com/zmisc/anacschart.htm

A whopping 48 of the 204 search hits contained the word ANACS.

ANACS = 48 / 204 = 23.5%

Does that tell you what people are looking for?

I'm impressed.

Rest in Peace

Exactly...

When I do an ebay search, I usally have PCGS, NGC, ANACS or ICG stated in the coin search. Most buyers will evidentally figure out that their dollar will go further if they buy something that is certified/authenticated by one of these top TPG's. Face it, there is too many fakes being sold on ebay and many collectors like me are very reluctant to buy anything "raw" on ebay.

I am positive that the same response (percentage) or number of hits will be quite similar, if not MORE, if this very coin was listed in a PCGS or NGC holder.

You will have collectors searching for a given coin by type/date/mm (pretty much in that order) and many collectos that will search ebay for coins by type/date/mm AND their TPG of choice!

Listing a coin certified by a TPG definitely carries more weight (hits and views) than selling it raw.

I often use ANACS in my searchs. They have always been as good or better then the top 2 when it comes to copper. Plus they list the varieties some companies won't. Joe

It's another fine example of how the Internet, message boards, and the people using them will aquire *real* and useful information and then decide "what the reality is." Chest thumping declarations aren't going to cut it anymore. Neither will renting logos.

Kudos to ANACS! They'll only get better with Mr. Taylor in charge.

weakness becomes strength."

Being new at this, one thing I'm rapidly learning is that a lot of raw coins sold on ebay are not exactly as represented on the listing. It never fails that pictures of the coins will be made to make flaws almost invisible. A particularly flattering photograph angle, deceptive light positioning, or failing to mention that a coin has an obvious problem (in hand) is almost guaranteed. Once the coin is in hand I'll go back to the listing and see that if I'd really paid attention to the photograph, I would have discovered the problem. A couple of examples are using the camera flash to hide rim dings and carbon spots. Not all sellers do this and some are very good at making it clear the entire condition of the coin. On some sellers though, it's amazing how close to the line they come without crossing it to getting bad feedback. No wonder people like certified coins from the "big 4".
