updating an earlier post with better photos of each coin. Since my 13 year old son has taken a liking to this hobby, I would like him to keep one of these two coins. Are either of these worth sending in to be graded for him? 1908 1907

nice to let your son have such valuable coins. Your pictures don't quite show enough to answer your question. Grading IMO is a simple financial decision. Will the grading add value to the coin more than its own cost? Each grade point makes a huge difference in that determination.

Well those coins are both worth about $315 each in melt value, if their real. I don't see how it would hurt to have them graded, especially if you care more about the sentimental value of them.

Quote: I don't see how it would hurt to have them graded I could hurt your wallet. Grading is not something you do unless given a reason against it. It requires a reason to do it. As the saying goes, "innocent until proven guilty and raw until proven to be worth grading." OK I made that up....

The 1907 is choice AU. The reason I would consider grading would be to insure they don't get further damaged

They are both worth grading. The 1908 looks MS63 or slider AU58, the 1907 is a nice mid AU. They will be sealed in secure holders with photo evidence and serial numbers. Not only will they protect the coins from your son in case of misadventure, they protect the coins from damage. The 1908 is the better of the two condition-wise but I am sure your son would be proud to have either of them!

Thank you all for the input. it was very helpful. Like it was mentioned above, I would prefer to grade one only for the simple purpose of preserving the condition. Plus I think it would give him more of a 'prize piece' to his collection. Every collector should have that one item that just means a little more than the others. I'll let you know the grade when it comes back.. thanks again all.

I'd keep the 1908 over the 1907 gold piece...Liberty half eagle. The luster looks better and the mintage is a shorter run by 200,000 for the 1908. https://libertyhalfeagle.com/libert...gle-mintage/Make that by 450,000 I missed the mintmark on the 1907.

Agree. The pics aren't the best, but the '08 easily seems the best of the two.

You can always use ANACS as a lesser priced alternative to NGC and PCGS.
