In 1969 Leonard Casley, a wheat/sheep farmer in Western Australia was upset with the government's wheat quotas, so he decided to succeed from Western Australia and Australia. He established the Hutt River Province and became Prince Leonard I. At no time has this Province been acknowledged by either state or federal governments as being legitimate. He authorised coins and stamps to be made, to help raised funds to support the Principality. A guy by the name of Kevin Gale was given the job of marketing the coins and did such a great job, that Prince Leonard knighted him. However Kevin Gale set up a company in Queensland with the name of Hutt River Province and became it's only director. He then authorised The New Queensland mint, a subsidiary of Continental Coin Company of California, to produce a range of coins in the name of Hutt River Province, without the knowledge of Prince Leonard. These coins, unlike the genuine HRP coins, did not have the effigy of Prince Leonard on them. The coins all had American themes, like Operation Desert Storm and Fathers of Baseball, and were aimed at the American market. At a later date when Prince Leonard found out, he organised a meeting with Kevin Gale, but Gale died before the meeting could take place. Gale was later declared a traitor by Prince Leonard and stripped of his knighthood posthumously. Casley stepped down as Prince in 2017, and his son Graeme became Prince. Two years later Casley died and after his death, his son abdicated, and in 2020 dissolved the HRP and sold off some of the land to pay his father's tax debt to the Australian government.
So this is one of those unauthorised coins. Produced in California.
1992 Fathers of Baseball featuring Albert Spalding. This is the copper-nickel version, so no silver.
So the island thing. There is an Albert Island, but as I said, it had nothing to do with the coin.
So the clues I dropped. "Think inside the box." Albert is in a square box sort of shape, which is a baseball diamond. Ok maybe a little vague. "let it slide" like sliding into the base. "<>" after my name on one of my recent post, meant to look like a diamond. Ok, maybe a bit vague again.
Anyway I hope you all enjoyed playing. At least 2 of you guessed the correct year.
Well, that's certainly something that was not on my radar. I'm not sure I would have given the same answers to our questions, but it's what it's. Looking forward to the next challenge.
