I agree the coin is a bit strange and rather austere looking for the casual observer. But I guess the idea was to feature Wilhelmina on the reverse as she played an important role during WW-II (the coin commemorates the 25th anniversary of the liberation of The Netherlands). The text on the reverse translates as: "The Netherlands Rise Again". I do have to admit that typically, Dutch commemorative coins are rather plain looking. I like the commemoratives from overseas parts such as the former Antilles much better.

Odd, but cool coin. The Liberation secured a great relationship between them and Canadians that lasts until today and beyond. Every friend who has went there has been treated like gold. I hope to make it there 1 day.
