I was told by an auction house that basically coins;unless dated before 1930 weren't worth anything. Is that true? If so I need to stop trying.

Ask your auctioneer if he's heard of a 1969-S Lincoln Memorial cent Double Die...or the dang infamous 1955.
(Both potentially worth thousands of dollars)

These are just two (extreme) examples of literally THOUSANDS of coins with premiums minted after 1930.
