The 'widows mite' is typically one of these, at least to the modern collectors market:
This, I think, is a prutah of John Hyrcanus, like this:
The back would read, in hebrew, '[John Hyrnacus] the high priest, and the council of the Jews'. The front is crossed cornucopiae and, as suggested, a pomegranate. These were issued in Jerusalem from 135 BC to 104 BC.
