Finally reorganizing my Canadians and have a question about these Nova Scotia Cents. The 'C' on the reverse of the One Cent appears to be at different locations. Is this typical? I only have one with the low C?
Also if you wouldn't mind - grade them
THANX

I see that too, where there's a larger gap between CE in CENT?
Good spot! I looked in my variety book, but there's no reference.
Also look at the position of "NOVA" to the wreath--or the date.
Does the crown look different to you?

Update: I dug a little deeper and found two documented varieties.
I think there's more, especially since those crowns are different.
The value between these two differences is small.

KurtS,
I took a closer look at my 1861's. I have four of them. Only one had the low 'C'. Don't know what it means. Also I have one Brunswick 1861 and it looked like the other three.
I may pass this info on to that variant web-site and see what they have to say.
I will keep ya informed.

I have one of these in EF-40, worth $22. Large rosebud (LB) or small rosebud (SB) in Trends lists the same values for each grade, i.e. $11 in VF-20, $7.50 in F-12, $5 in VG-8 and $2.50 in G-4. 800,000 were minted in both varieties combined. Your first one looks F-12 and the second one VF-20. Here is mine:

according to my Charlton Standard Catalog of Cdn coins:

"There are two distinct reverses for 1861. The first (1861) has much detail in the crown and a large rosebud...On the second reverse (1861-1864) the crown has a narrower headband and generally less detail, the rosebud...is smaller, and the rosebud and certain other parts of the design come closer to the lettering and the raised line just inside the rim denticles."

Does that help explain about the low C?
