I have found this example in an album where it really doesn't fit... so, I truly believe that it is some kind of forgery... however, before I will put it away, will be glad to hear an another opinion.

Diametar is exactly 38mm as it should be.

Weight is 25.13g (25.00g it should be)...

there is edge lettering as it should be.

Krause #123 for 1898 list these at $100 in fine condition.

Therein lies a temptation to alter a genuine common coin of a different date, and disguise the fraudulent work with what looks like wear and mild corrosion.

From the pictures I see on my screen, I would have to agree with the opinion that it is a fake.

A combination of wear and mild toning / corrosion may have produced what we see here. This one could have been given a finishing treatment with acid.

There are several of these which have sold at auction recently to help compare with genuine examples. https://www.coinarchives.com/w/resu...&results=100

As pointed out by @sel_191, the value in this condition is not more than $100 US. Comparing yours to the examples in CoinArchives (and in a broader web search), I see only two things that concern me, but I think these are minor (?). First, yous is slightly off center. All the other examples I can see are perfectly centered. Also, the letters in DER obverse on yours have a slightly gothic look which does not appear on genuine coins (the base of the D and E do not appear to be flat on yours), but maybe this is just an artifact of the photograph/scan.
As there was no other date for this type, that removes the possibility of an altered date. If it is a fake, I think it is an extraordinarily good one. I'm leaning toward genuine, but there are others out here who are much better at this.

Thank you for your replies and opinions, sel_69l and tdziemia.

Yes, the first thing which also doesn't look right was the bad centering... and, that's also true, not only in "der" but some other letters seem to be in a different font.
