Hello, I have a few of these 1968 S Lincoln cents for some time now. They were previously identified as " Close AM" and "Wide AM." The terms refer to the distance between the letters of "A" and "M" in the word "AMERICA" on the reverse side of the coin. The difference in separation between the "A" and "M" letters is quite noticeable when you compare the two photos. It is reminiscent of the "Close" and "Wide" AM Lincoln pennies from 1992, 1998, 1999, and 2000. Question - is this a new variety or has it been reported before? Which variety is more common? Is there any value to these coins?

That's completely normal for that year. The Close AM variety only exists on the 1992 Philadelphia and 1992 Denver Cents, and on the 1998, 1999, and 2000 San Francisco Proof Cents. The Wide AM variety only exists on the 1998, 1999, and 2000 Philadelphia Cents.
Errers and Varietys.

That's correct as far as I know, but could you give us true close-ups to compare, please? to the CCF!

@Coinfrog - sure. Here are close ups of first, the " Close AM" cent and then, the " Wide AM" cent. I have also uploaded a photo of the obverse sides of both cents.

Here are photos of a 1) Proof 1968 S Lincoln Cent (which is similar to the " Wide AM" version that I posted, and 2) an Uncirculated 1968 S Lincoln Cent (which is similar to the " Close AM" version).

I am not a variety specialist, but I have always thought that there was only one AM style for coins of this era, and your pics have not convinced me otherwise.

Look at the A in STATES it is centred between the T's which makes them both Wide AM's the A is closer to the right T on a Close AM, I think what you are seeing as a Close AM is from die wear ,my humble opinion

Both Wide AM with the difference in spacing between the A nd M being the result of die polishing that grinds down the fields increasing the separation of the letters.

That makes sense.
