I was wondering why the star is broken on the 1878 morgan. Its not just in phili but cc an sf why did all the mints have this star broken? Another curious thing on All dates and mints of morgans is the letter N in united, it has a doubled N or a break on the diagonal, anyone know why? thank you Ben

jny,

This is a hub defect. Hubs are used to create working dies and are created at the Philly mint and shipped to branch mints, where mintmarks are applied.
That's why you see this defect at all mints.
