I found a 1982 D cent and I can't tell if it's a small or large date I weighed it and it weighs 3.1 grams.

You've got a large date. Look at the downstroke of the 2. Straight=Large Curvy=Small

Most of the 1982 cents are all readily accessible and inexpensive. There are a couple of previously unknown 82D Small Date copper cents that somehow got out. These are the unicorns and it is extremely unlikely that more will be found. (I personally still have my doubts about the ones that were found.)

To be valuable
it must be a small date
it must be a D mint coin
And it must be copper not plated zinc.

Any other combination is common.
