I started collecting coin many years ago when I had a paper route. Then my uncle came back from WW2 and gave me a bunch of foreign coins which I prized and was proud to show to my friends. I used to add to my collection from coins found in pocket change and never had to worry about counterfeits or cleaned coins. Now fast forward 50 plus years I've picked up the hobby again but boy how it has changed! Now I'm collecting both modern coins and classic coins but have to watch out for counterfeits and cleaned coins. I'm told to buy only graded coins that are determined authentic. Even then I find it difficult to find coins that have not been cleaned. I actually find some of the cleaned coins more attractive! I cannot remember the last time I found a keeper in pocket change. In spite of all the changes I am still enjoying coin collecting in my retirement but have no idea what my kids and grandkids will do with my collection when I pass. I can only hope that it will kindle an interest with one or more of them.

Everyone should enjoy the hobby, have fun, and most importantly - love their collection. There is no right way for everyone. Although there might be a few wrong ways.

Counterfeiters and over production and massive amounts of commemorative coins have really made a mess of this hobby lately.

I am interested in hearing you explain a bit about your opinion on cleaned coins. What do you find more attractive about them? Are you referring to raw coins, already slabbed, or both?

They are already floating test balloons for animals or youth sports quarters.

I definitely had a few coins that I wished I hadn't messed with....but I am happy to say I have lived through it, learned, and try to always teach others the right way to do things. Like it says at the top of the page.. 'Education is the key to collector success!'
