This Vespasian or Titus(?) denarius looks a bit weird. Not talking about the shine (probably electrolysis), but what's really bothering me are the extra legs and head of the cow. Or are there two cows on this coin? Romans are not my area of expertise and I am having a hard time ID"ing this one. Checked Wildwinds and acsearch, but without result.
I don't think any ancient coin catalogue lists 'cows' - in this instance, these are described as 'oxen' ploughing (a motif more common in the provinces, sometimes called 'the founders oxen'), but alone they might be called bulls. I search both terms when trying to ID a coin like this. Beneath is COS VIII.
