In my research about Ottoman coins, I had to understand arabic numbers, because the Ottoman used arabic alphabet in formal issues. Although Arabic is a right to left language, the numbers are written left to right. Here is a chart that shows arabic numbers, when you replace these with the regular ones (1,2,3... etc) you will obtain the mint date of the coin. However, the date represented using these numbers will be either Hegirean or Julian (Ottoman Empire used Julian calendar for financial issues) There are several conversion tables or sites and I'm trying to find one in English 2 and 3 can be very tricky, considering that the coins will be at least a hundered years old. Correction: The calendar the Ottoman Empire used is not exactly Julian I guess, closer to Hegirean but not the same. In TR it's called "Rumi" (I still haven't figured out the exact calculation, but I use the converter of the Turkish History Foundation.) Edited by RenaL 01/26/2006 09:26 am

For example, this is a coin minted in the last Sultan Vahdeddin's time. 100 Kurus. The date says 1336 (Julien) at the bottom of the picture on the right. (couldn't decide what to call it, obverse or reverse) The figure on the left is Sultans signature, below that, the season is shown(2) 1336 is 1920 the first year it is minted. 2 below the Signature, means the second year-1921. It is quite complicated. It took me a while to learn it last week:)

Let's discuss that in some other topic Carl.
PS: According to the catalogue I got today, that coin is defined as RR (extra rare) :)

Persian numerals are the same, except for the number 4. The numerals in Central Asia for 0 & 5 are the reverse.
