Another recent acquisition. Looks like a nice, well struck AU with some remaining red. Sorry about the flash. My book lists it at $15 in XF and $315 in Unc., so... what do you think this one is worth? Also, does anyone know if this is the variety with the regular or sloping to the left final 9? Thanks! Have you seen this page? It might help on deciding on the date variety--I find this one tough to tell. As to grade/value--it's a challenge from pics--I see a couple tiny rim dings that might not be anything. It does look well-struck; is there some wear on high points? I'd say gEF-AU, probably more the latter. My 2008 Maccas shows AUS $60 for EF and $135 for aUNC.

Quote: My book lists it at $15 in XF and $315 in Unc., so... what do you think this one is worth? Wahahaha... you could've thought of an easier question couldn't you? There is no way of knowing...depends on who the potential buyers are; I guess ebay would have one likely price range and an auction room in one country another - best prices should be realised in the Aussie auction rooms I would have thought, but I have no idea as to value.. My first assessment was it should be an EF by my normal grading standards so it could be an EF+ or AU by Krause's.

Hi Matty, I agree with you on the grading. Krause is a little lax in the sense that they apply the same grading standards to all coin types, which is not right.

Wait a minute, I never said I thought it was wrong - in fact it has got to be right surely?!

Well, the general standard of 95% of details intact for a grade of XF is something I would disagree with. Some types get 5% wear from barely any contact, while others can take a good amount of circulation and still retain a high percentage of details. For example, those 1950's and up German marks, the difference between an XF and VF is only separation in the acorn caps from the acorns. A difference of maybe 1% of the total detail. I also don't like that counter-marked coins are capped of at XF, even if there is no actual wear.

Hard to grade from that image (or from most images for that matter). I'd be happy to grade that one EF from the image, in hand it could well be AU.
