Quote: Simple equation: 100 cents = $1.00 240 pennies = 1 pound sterling. Ahh but in our decimal age 100 pennies = £1 as well.

I'm glad you brought this up bibd and I agree with you. PENNY PENNY PENNY!! English isn't a static language; it's dynamic, constantly changing and evolving. The only people who care that it is properly called a "cent" are the esoteric "enlightened ones". I'm sorry but the majority wins in English! There are thousands of words that have been missused in English but, because they were popular with the masses, were adopted. The word Neanderthal is correctly pronounced Neandertal but 99% of people and tv programs incorrectly call them Neanderthals. Most of us just don't care and have more important things to worry about.

Quote: "Yada Yada yada"...in Australia too? lol. I know it's from Seinfeld, but that doesn't stop me, hehe. Kurt mailed a Newfoundland 10 Cent coin , yada, yada, yada, now Newman has another hole filled in his album! Quote: As I don't watch TV, will someone please tell me what a 'Yada Yada' is? Using common vernacular (i.e. the word penny) demonstrates the ability to communicate. Using the proper nomenclature(i.e. cent) demonstrates knowledge.
I'm not saying that I never call US cents pennies, just that I try not to do it when other collectors are around.

I really think it comes down to the person, personality and what they were raised saying. For as long as I can remember it was always referred to as a penny for a single coin and a cent in multiples, and I have no idea why.
My biggest complaint is the attitude people have with it. Most people here are beginners and it can be awkward just asking a question but to be verbally attached makes it that much more difficult. If you were someone I knew personally and you corrected my vocabulary I would do one of three things: 1. I would laugh and change my answer, 2. shrug it off and remember it next time or 3. verbally attach you back on something more personal and offensive. As you read through the posts most of them fall into group one and two but I have read a lot that would fall into option three. Just because you know something does not mean that everyone else does, and if you want people to come back then you need to be nice and explain things. I would rather be treated like a two year old for a few minutes than a complete #$% the entire time I am here.
Maybe to help this error someone needs to take some time and make a sticky post that has the correct terms in it and explain why we use those words and not the slang. I really enjoy this board and the information I am gaining here, but when someone takes the time to make someone new feel like an idiot, then I really wonder what their interests in this board are.

I really hope you are confusing us with another forum because we try to make sure everyone on here treats each and everyone else with respect here on the forums and we have deleted whole posts before because they were nothing but an attack on someone that was uninformed. If you ever come across any thread where you feel someone was mistreated (new member or old) there is a link called "send note to staff" at the bottom of every post, click that to let a moderator know that you are concerned with the wording of a certain post. I know us Moderators try to read each and every post made but sometimes we may miss something and another member sees it pretty easily because its a sore spot with them or for some other reason

This is most definitely the best moderated board I have ever used, and that goes back almost 25 years now.

Odd you should say that. I've got a few friends that have names ending in "thal" and from what they tell me it is supposed to be pronounced "tal". That is due to their being German. Does this mean that the Neanderthals were German? A rose by any other name is still a rose. I like that one about a PENNY for your thoughts. I wonder how many times that has been said? And not in England but here. Of course today it would have to be a little more. No one does or gives anything for a penny today.

too. I think this forum was built on good intentions and moderated in the same spirit. Additionally, many collectors here contribute a lot of good will--experts and beginners alike. And a little humor goes a long way to take the edge off prickly details--anything that becomes "sacred" just asks for it. Isn't it easy to be "penny wise", but "pound foolish"? Quote: Does this mean that the Neanderthals were German? Nope, but I'm sure they had those guttural fricatives down pat.

Bryan1315 (and others) I am very thankful for a very friendly board and like you said, the message I was looking for has been removed. I just felt bad because someone new was asking for help and not a single person gave any help and seemed to be mocking the post. This board is a great board and that is the reason I became a part of it and do not want to talk negative about it or anyone else here. I have learned so much from everyone here and hope to teach others what I have learned as well. And who knows, maybe I was just reading the post when I was upset myself and took it the wrong way, but needless to say we just need to think before we type every now and then.
