Picked this up for $250. Ron Pope lists this variety in his excellent Buffalo nickel abraded die variety reference (BO5-18S2FNF-01 in page 89). The variety is listed as extremely rare without an estimate of known survivors in his study.

Thoughts? Thanks!

Pope's reference ranks the 1918-S as the date with the 2nd weakest strike in the series. He estimates that 53.2% of 18-S's encountered exhibit a weak strike. The only date that is found weakly struck more often is the 1926-D estimated at 54.5%. These are the only 2 dates in the series that are found weakly struck in more than half of coins encountered. This one seems to have an average strike notwithstanding the abraded obverse die.
