tropicalbats, I made the animation and almost didn't post it because I'm not sure it helps. I thought I saw the dots on the original image, but the more I looked the less certain I was. I made the animation to help with the question, but now I just don't know. I have lots of detailed images like this that I've worked on in Photoshop, but they never get posted back to CCF. I have to clear them out about once a week. My wife likes these animations and made the comment that it really was hard to tell one way or the other, and just when you think you see it, it fades away. Then you start to doubt your eyes again. So I'm on the fence with this one. It'll be interesting to hear how it turns out.

And yet, always good to have more, rather than less, to think about with coins like this. Glad you posted that.

Curious to see how this turns out. If this really is a variety from a reverse die that omitted the dots, I wonder why it took over a hundred years to come to light. There must be many more out there.

Both of the cents I've inspected (personally in one case, through photos in the other) feature faint, circular depressions where the dots should be. I've put the call out for more info, should such exist. I'm not sure there will be a final answer, only an array of working hypotheses. I'm till working on it, though.

I can finally see the depressions. I didn't understand that they are 50+% larger than the area of the periods. Once I understood that, I can see the first two with no problem! The last depression seems to be smaller, but I still see it.
This is really interesting! I wish I had a few rolls of '09 V D B s to look through.

We've heard from the man himself. I have another 1909 VDB with only the dot after V, the other two are missing.

There's a parallel universe where the 1909's have dots but no letters........

Coop; Could you point out the location of the dots on the photos I submitted to the thread. Located on page one.
Yokozuna; I also posted a series of photos on a 1909-VDB that I have that shows no dots. It is posted on the first page. Could you point out the dots on the photo I submitted.
Thanks; Dan
