1998 Memorial Lincon Cent Error? I In Liberty Missing

1998-Memorial-Lincon-Cent-Error?-I-In-Liberty-Missing

This is a 1998 penny I found a few years ago in my change. Notice that the "I" in "liberty" is missing along with most of the date. Although the scan doesn't show it, If you hold the coin at an angle to the light you can see a ghost image of the "I" and the missing numbers in the date. Please take a look and tell me what you guys think.

The first Image was the reverse. It is normal. I don't know why it won't open. Sorry.

grease and other gunk sometimes clog some of the recesses of a die resulting in a loss of detail on the coin. It is considered to be a normal part of the minting process although extreme examples can carry a premium.
