Hi from Pittsburgh PA! While I've long been a "collector" of obvious keepers in pocket change (clipped or offset strikes, silver coins, old dates, etc), I've just inherited a bunch of coins from the estate of a relative. I'm not sure he or anybody else in the family was a really serious collector, just saved lots of old and silver US coins and foreign ones as well. Some are already in holders, some even marked with grades and prices. Mostly lots (LOTS!) of loose coins to look through so I have been learning a LOT about this hobby recently. I'll probably try to post pictures of some of the more interesting things I find (like the 1875-S 20-cent piece I never even knew existed). So let me start by asking what the best way is to get good shots of coins when all I have is a basic digital camera to work with. And I'll apologize in advance because I'm sure I'll have questions that have been answered in these forums already, but there's so much here to look through! Happy I found this place.
Rest in Peace

We look forward to your participation.

If your camera has a macro option, try that first, and trim the excess leaving only the coin in the photos.

When using a digital camera, cut two 6" pieces from a 2x4. place them on edge with enough space to support the camera. Place the coin below and use a light source from either side. This method eliminates camera shake/blurry images. Works for me using my Canon Cool-pix.
