As many of you know, the ANA is working to update their programs and website, along with lots of other internal workings. This process is taking longer than they had anticipated.

Here is a link to the ANA board of governors.

I am just very dissappointed in the way it is being done. It seems that whoever it doing it has no clue.

1.) I am by no means a qualified webmaster, but I have Dreamweaver, which is one of the better website development tools. I can completely rebuild my site and test it. THEN delete the old one and upload the new one.

The delete and upload portion takes about 3 minutes for my 25 page site. So that's only 3 minutes the site is down. Considering the size of the ANA site, this would probably take about 2 hours tops. Done at 4am, 99.9% of users would never be affected.

2.) Dealer links. Changing the links to our own pages on the site with absolutely no warning is extremely unprofessional and downright rude. We have over 600 links on the web to our ANA page. All went dead instantly. No advanced warning, no notification, no apologies. Just gone. Its not like this is a free service, we deserve (and paid for) some respect and consideration. I would be willing to bet that they made over a million dealer links go dead with no warning.

3.) So now we've gotten the 600 links fixed and going to our new page. Great? No. The new page has a horrible feel. It has a 4th gradish look to me. They also put most of our information in incorrectly. We're now part-time and don't do retail, according to the ANA.

I am overall extremely dissappointed and disgusted. They did not plan this well at all.

We also have a "False" rating for retail. I have written to the ANA several times without a reply. I am not sure what they are hoping to gain. It seems as if the system is failing with no one caring to fix it. The lack of communication is just one more strike against the ANA. While I believe that they are a good group for the most part with many wonderful things to their credit, they certainly missed the boat on this one.

The whole login thing is mind boggling. I cannot login, so I have no idea what features will be available to me once I can. For a "Leader" in our industry, they certainly seem to have no clue how to lead. Their lackluster attempts at organizing the community and growing the membership base is sad in my opinion. I have no idea what they want or how they plan to obtain it. This is poor communication. As a member, and dealer, it would be nice to know what they are doing. If and when I ever receive a reply regarding the updates I will post it here so that everyone may know.

I also can't believe that coinlink.com rated them site of the week for FEB 14. I think they're a little confused.

This whole mess with the ANA is leaving a bad taste in my mouth. Their website is just one of many issues. Seems as if the lights are on, but nobody is home.....

Well no wonder I was not able to join, I figured something was wrong, but now hearing yawl, I wonder if it is still worth joining an organization that ignores its members and dealer supporters? And at the moment can't or won't except new members--

I have another thread concerning ebay. I still believe that they serve a good purpose. Their library is the best without doubt. They also offer a few other good things. However, the lack of direction and their inability to communicate with their members is annoying to say the least. They come up with standards and rules which they at best regulate on rare occasions. Just seems to be a lack of leadership for the most part. No one is stepping up to the pump.

If Susan can get this forum up and going in a matter of days, what is the ANA's problem? For as big as they are, you would think they could operate in a way that is professional and courteous considering they are a members based organization.

Although I do not always agree with the way they do things (their website is a prime example) yet membership in the ANA has many benefits. Anyone who has priced numismatic books knows that it can be very costly to add to your numismatic library. It is easier if you only collect one series, but for those who collect multiple series, you could spend almost as much on research materials as you do in coins. The ANA has a wonderful library lending benefit that pays for the membership many times over. Also, I've had to email or call them for information a number of times and I have always received very detailed information from very friendly people. There is also the subscription to The Numismatist which is a terrific member benefit.

I believe that the ANA does care about its members although some of their plans do not seem to be well-considered. Now, more than ever, I think it is important for there to be one organization that we can all count on to help oversee the hobby. The internet has produced a whole new coin-buying venue. This is great in that people now have access to coins from all over the world; it is bad in that the scammers have a much larger geographical location in which to operate and the anonymity protects them. The ANA is a much-needed organization. JMHO, but I think it's worth thinking about.
Rest in Peace
