I think #1 is this Zeeland oord (Numista 103747). I can't figure out the date, but out of the Numista options it's most likely [16]37. EDIT: could also be Numista 53417 (a slightly later type of Zeeland oord). In this case the date is probably [16]53 (or [16]57?), which fits the visible shapes much better. No comment on #2, sorry. Can't even read any legend (if that's even legend and not just an imitative jumble).

Thanks so much january1may. You're absolutely right. It is a 53417 dated 1657, upon closer inspection. I really appreciate your help!

For anyone that is wondering- the second coin is a 12th century French denier (Maine).

Welcome Thomas66, May I assume you recovered these items while detecting in Maine? I live and dig the area also, 16th C is my earliest coin recovery. I recall a newspaper article regarding someone eyeballing an early (12-13thc I believe) English shortcross silver penny in the Ogunquit river. Congrats on the early coinage, & HH,

Maine the French region and Maine the US state are different places (IIRC, the state is named for the region, but I'm not sure). It would be strange (though not impossible) to find a medieval French coin in New England.

Steelheadwill, I got this coin and a few other ancient ones from my late father's collection. Not sure where he picked them up from.
As january1may stated- this coin is from the French region of Maine, but thanks for your input on the subject nonetheless.

Shucks, us hicks call the counterfeits. It could also be counterfeit, I guess. I admit that I didn't think of that. But if it was a counterfeit it had to be a really low-end one, and the Middle Ages had plenty of imitative issues with illegible legends, so it sounded plausible enough. (...Incidentally, after your comment I had to check that I spelled "imitative" correctly. I did.)

I wasn't questioning it's authenticity. I just wanted to know when/ where it was from.
I do appreciate the help on the original identification though.
