Hi all,

I am VERY new to coins. I basically decided it would be a good idea to buy some gold and silver eagles just in case the economy took a serious nose dive in the future.

I bought one gold and one silver eagle from a person on ebay recently. The gold one was 1/10th oz and the silver was 1 oz. The gold was dated 1989 and the silver 2007.

They LOOK real to me, but again I am an amateur. The thing that worries me is now when I look at this persons feedback a person gave him a bad feedback and said he sent him a "fake coin".

My question is - is there any easy way to tell if a gold and silver eagle are real or not? Should I try bending them or something?

Thanks for any info.

Weigh them or bring them to a coin shop.

I would say the first step would be to weigh them. If the weight is not what it is supposed to be, then you might have a fake. If the weight is correct, then a fake is unlikely.

I agree with 1sikevo take them to a coin shop and have them weighed and while you are there ask the coin dealer about buying the gold and silver coins from him ,get a price and compare it to what you paid on ebay if they are close take the guess work out of it on ebay and purchase from a coin shop !

In this instance weight may not be a big factor as silver content. A 1 oz, that is troy ounce, in this case, would be easy to copy. Making it .999 silver is where they would be cheating.
Rest in Peace

Yean, an auction number would help so we can see a picture.
The reason I recommended a coin shop is because a novice collector may not have all the basic tools (loupe, scale, etc).

weight them if possible else go to coin shop.
Are they in holders of any kind?
You could get a hint by going to library and comparing. Usually most libraries have Krause or Red Book available.
