I have several coins that I know nothing at all about. I have searched images etc. and cannot find any details. Any information would be most appreciated. This coin is really hard to see the details. It I quite heavy (like lead or something). It is not a perfect circle but the grooves go right the way around the rim and look to be hand done. One side looks like it has JAVA or JAYA with a star above it and maybe 1799 with a scroll pattern underneath. The other side has I:S= also with the star above and the scroll pattern underneath. It is about 3cm in diameter and a few millimetres thick. Image: coin1.jpg36.13 KB Image: coin11.jpg34.24 KB Edited by Sap 10/02/2008 03:12 am

Hey yes thanks ! I just looked up more images and that is definately what it is, apparently it does have high lead content as they were made from old canons due to a metal shortage at the time. I will go and find another coin I am unsure of !! Many Thanks

No problem, thanks for the response, since the coin isn't in my reference book I wasn't 100% sure. A very interesting piece it is

P.S does anyone know how to edit a profile, I just looked at mine and it says my age is 13 !! I must have put in the wrong century when adding birthdate ! First (brass) is Thailand, 50 satang (0.5 baht) dated BE2500 (1957) Second (CuNi) is Thailand, 1 baht dated BE2505 (1962). And the small ones would be Netherlands East Indies (Indonesia) 1/10 Gulden (silver).

Yeah, I like to identify them Though I haven't seen many Arabic coins here - I'll leave that to the experts! I've once seen the smallest one described as a Turkey 10 para. But who knows if they were right. Arabic coins are much of a dark side to us.

The big one is Iran 20 rials KM#1244, commemorating the 1400th anniversary of Mohammed's flight.
The second one is a 5/10 qirsh from Egypt (KM#304), issued in the name of Muhammad V and bearing his accession year: 1327AH (=1909AD). I am not able to see the reign year on your picture.
The third one is indeed a 10 para from Turkey KM#760, also issued in the name of sultan Muhammad V, with his accession year 1327AH. As on your Egyptian coin, I am not able to read the reign year.

to the forum. It is a lot easier to identify when we have both sides. But you will find that in most cases, someone on the forum will be able to identify.
