Had these two coins that I bought in a lot and always wondered about the attribution. I could be wrong, but I believe the only two emperors that had cross within wreath was Valentinian III and Theodosius II. The coin on the left was attributed to Theodosius II and the one on the right is unattributed. How did the previous owner to come to that conclusion that the coin is of Theodosius? What are the clues? Could any of the two be Valentinian? Looks like there is a tiny bit of a legend visible on the coin on the right.

This type is much more common for Theodosius II than for anyone else, so the default assumption for a cross-in-wreath reverse is Theodosius II. This might be where the attribution came from.

The legend on the right coin starts DN THE..., so it is, in fact, Theodosius II. I can't read any legend on the left coin.

The mintmark is, alas, off flan on the right coin (and doesn't appear to be legible on the left coin).

EDIT: I see that the left coin is attributed to Cyzicus mint; perhaps the previous owner managed to read the mintmark, and found out that it is not attested for Valentinian III?

I can't read it myself, but it looks like it might possibly be readable under better lighting.

Even with better lighting, I don't see any mintmark. I wish I could pin it down to Valentinian III, that would be a great find.
