Best advice
1) Don't clean coins that are legible and do not have corrosion that could damage the coins worse
2)General Rule of thumb for grading is if it's a coin thats a few hundred dollars graded it's worth it, if not your grading fees will end up costing more than the coin itself
and lastly
3) invest in 2 things, 1 a Red Book (just for mintage and information on the coins) and buy 1 copy of the grey sheet (the big newspaper style one) to give you an idea of dealer pricing
