Hi!

I don't fully trust my grading skills, so it's always great to hear your opinions. Thanks in advance!

This is 1 Zecchino, Republic of Venice, Marcantonio Giustinian (1684-1688)

VF (British grading).

I don't think that it is possible to apply Sheldon grading standards in this case.
Too many different factors affecting the overall condition (and thus value) have to be considered, which Sheldon doesn't address.

I have about 200 or so 13th to 19th Century European hammered and milled gold and silver coins in my collection.

Perhaps some collectors of English hammered and milled coins may wish to offer a further opinion.

Couldn't begin to grade it, but that's a beautiful coin for sure.

In that, I agree.

I agree with both comments.

When I look at coins from this era that DO have a grade from NGC or PCGS, I tend to agree with sel_191's viewpoint, or at least I would say that the grade often bears no relation to the eye appeal of the coin.
A CoinArchives search on Venice zecchino NGC turns up a handful of mostly MS graded specimens that nonetheless are informative.
Here is a later zecchino, poorly struck and with far less eye appeal than yours, that earned an MS-62. https://www.coinarchives.com/w/lotv...8b6d533c644e
You can also find this UNC details coin from less than a decade later than yours. https://www.coinarchives.com/w/lotv...534e89d525fa I don't think yours is that far away.

I think it's a well struck coin with strong details all over, maybe some light traces of wear (I do not claim to have great skill at discerning wear vs worn dies or other pre-circulation issues that affect appearance). So I would be a bit higher, in the EF to AU ragne.

@strato, as luck would have it, I just ran across this example of the same coin (same doge) that graded MS63 by PCGS.

Again, to my eye I do not see your coin being too far off from this, but would be interested to hear some other views on these comparisons to the existing graded examples

Very little if any wear. There are a few small scratches. I'd say AU-55 on this one.

Thank you for all the feedback! this helps a lot!

@sel_69l I am still figuring out the differences between the British and Sheldon scales. Is there a good manual on the British system you would recommend?

@tdziemia this is super useful info! thank you for all the effort to research previous coins! Indeed they don't look too far off. I think the last one is quite close, with a more appealing Jesus side, but with more worn dies on the St Mark side. Despite the filed rims, the "UNC details" seems the nicest to me, while the "MS-62" is a bit less appealing in spite of the high grade.

That being said, it's hard to judge gold from pictures, lighting makes a big difference.
