Hi everyone, I am having trouble IDing these two bronze coins which I believe to be Parthian. The first is 17mm and 3.94 grams. While the obverse features a typical Parthian left-facing bust, the reverse appears to just have some text. the second is quite small at 8mm and 2.38 grams. While it has a similar bearded bust facing left, the reverse features a standing figure encircled by some text. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks.

Both are drachms from Elymais.

The first:
Uncertain Early Arsacid Kings
Late 1st century BC to early 2nd century AD
Van't Haaff type 10.4

The second:
Prince A
Late 2nd - early 3rd centuries AD
Van't Haaff 19.1.1-1A

Quote:
...features a standing figure

Artemis, holding bow in one hand, plucking arrow from her quiver with the other hand

Bob L - Thank you so much for your help!
I do have one question. You mention that the first is "Uncertain Early Arsacid Kings" and that the second is "Prince A." Does this mean that my coins specifically cannot be identified? Or does it mean that numismatic scholars themselves are unable to know? (After all, you do seem to have Van't Haaff numbers). I really appreciate it!

Both coins are from the Arsacid Dynasty of Elymais, which ran from c.25 BC through the fall of Elymais to the Sassanians, c.228 AD. Some of the rulers of this dynasty did include their names on their coins, but not in the case of these particular issues (your coins). Years are not spelled out on the coins of this period, and so we only have broad date ranges for each emission. You can see more examples of these types/varieties among my coins: http://www.forumancientcoins.com/ga...p?album=3637
