It's called environmental damage along with circulation wear and dirt . Yes this is common .

Thank you very much, another curious question does copper turns white-ish when they get environmental damage? it's the heaviest penny I have seen so far it weighs 3.18 to 3.20 grams. Just curious and I am very thankful for I learned something new.

It could have been plated at some point, this would account for it's off colour and slightly increased weight. All environmental damage is different, so it's difficult to link a particular colour to it. The good news it's still worth 1 cent!

Copper can turn almost any color of the rainbow, and then some, under different environmental conditions.
