Make sure that your family, friends, and colleagues are aware to place a coin in your doctoral hood at the hooding ceremony. Doctoral hoods in academic dress are not worn as head wear, but have been worn since ancient times for collecting alms given to scholars to support their studies. In other words, it's your own personal walking endowment collection bin. This is why the doctoral hood has a special curve at the bottom. It's to catch coins. Report this Post to the Staff
