Hello, Dear Members of this forum!
I found this 1882 penny which has " REG" engraved. Could anybody help me understand what does that stand for? Thank you very much!

It's called a counterstamp.
Looks like someone has stamped their name into for some reason.
Doesn't really do anything for the coin.

There are counterstamp collectors, It could be a love token with the reg being short for Regina, Carried by either a sailor/solder while away from home or the lady waiting for their return. some are more elaborately done. others crudely . There are others that have social or political meanings as with the Irish troubles counterstamps. you can google the word or search on this site as there are a good number of threads on them.

Presumably "REG" had meaning to whoever stamped it there, as the placement of the letters is too non-random for it to be simply someone testing their letter-punch kit on a coin. But without some context - for example, if this coin was a family heirloom and you know you had an ancestor (male or female) whose name began with "Reg" - it's impossible to figure out exactly why someone would have done this.
