Presumably "REG" had meaning to whoever stamped it there, as the placement of the letters is too non-random for it to be simply someone testing their letter-punch kit on a coin. But without some context - for example, if this coin was a family heirloom and you know you had an ancestor (male or female) whose name began with "Reg" - it's impossible to figure out exactly why someone would have done this.
