Does anyone know much about the 1983 set of Canadian coins that was sold by The Royal Mint in the UK? I have a very nice set and not many people know about it, so it seems... cheers |

Coins were struck in Ottawa (PL quality). Treat that set pretty much like any other aftermarket packaging gimmick...

Interesting that Charlton lists market value at $100 for the set BU Finish. It's hidden away in the volume 2 issue I don't think many were packaged this way. Not many coin shops were aware of it that I spoke to.

I only see 3 that were sold and each was from the UK. They went for $30 - $50 each. I imagine most people don't know there is a larger premium for this set in the Charlton guide as it is very hard to find in the guide..So yes these are the same coins but in a UK mint package. So why would Charlton place a much higher value on this set compared to the normal 1984 unc set? Just curious..would it be rarity of the package? It would make sense to place the same lower value on these in the cataloge.

I bought a 2006p set years ago like that and I had to pay duty bringing Canadian coins back to Canada. Never again!!

I'd go by the ebay recent solds as the better sense of the market value than whatever Charlton says. |

I understand that.... but why is there $90 price difference in the same book for market value of the same set? It seems strange to list the uk set for $100 and the 1983 uncirculated for $10. I believe the 3 people who bought them for $50 on ebay should of just bought a normal set for $10 if they were the same. it doesn't make much sense to me. |

The coins are the same, only the packaging is different, one can assume these 3 buyers thought they were getting Canadian coins struck by Royal Mint. |

I don't put faith in it but I want to know why Charlton's would do that. What was their reasoning to place such a high value on the uk set. I could see them maybe putting a $10 dollar premium but $90 is a lot. There had to be a reason to do this unless it was a typo.

Visit the UK site for ebay ( ebay.co.uk) and you'll find the set has sold multiple times for under $25.00 (CAD) - some for less than $15.00. The set, while attractive, is not particularly scarce or valuable on either side of the Atlantic. It would appear that the Charlton catalogue has out-dated information - nothing more to it. (FWIW: I have found that items listed in the catalogue's various "Derivative" sections do not get regular price adjustments.) Collecting history one coin or medal at a time! (c) commems.
