Hello again everybody
Please can one of you tell me why this particular 1971 2p decimal coin, that I found in my change above 30 years ago , has P.F.C stamped on to it ? Non of my others do !
Was it stamped at the mint or whilst in circulation ? (in which case, I wouldn't expect any of you to know why ! ) Is it even a genuine coin ?
Thank You All
Foeh

It's called a "Counterstamp".It was done after the coin left the Mint in circulation.
As you say, hard to say why.

Could be someone's initials, or just a kid fooling about. I did metalwork for a term at school when I was about 13 years old and we had some of those punches. Anyone could have used them if they'd wanted to try them out on a coin...

"Private First Class" is not a UK rank. "Lance Corporal" is the one-stripe equivalent, sometimes altered slightly for different units, eg the Royal Artillery use "lance bombardier".

Could have been done for any number of reasons.

Thank You so much JimmyD and NumisRob It's as I've always suspected but I needed to know for sure I knew I had to ask "yourselves that have the knowledge and know for certain"
I barely know a thing about coins, but I like them
In the 60's when I was a kid I remember drilling a hole in one of my h'pennys and putting it on string as a necklace ! I used a hand drill and was about 7 years old If I could speak to that child now, I would tell her off !
Coincidentally, my Hubby and me have an association with the initials on my beloved 2p coin ! So although it's only one I got myself, it's still as sentimental as the coins that were my Dads and the ones my Brother got me
Thank You Sir Derrin but I'm not posting it nor am I giving it to a member of our armed forces, no matter how good they are !
Thank You Anaximander
Funny enough NumisRob, oursleves and one of my brothers were only saying t'other day how awful it is that metalwork and woodwork aren't fully taught at school in the UK any more. My brothers, sister and I still do one or both of them to this day
Thank You all for answering my query so quickly, for being so knowledgeable and for being so nice
