It an old tine phrase. BU is supposed to be 60-63 and Ch Bu like 64/65. Doesn't mean they actually will be though

When the ANA created the "Official Grading Guide" in 1978, it only had 60 (Average), 65 (Gem), and 70 (Perfect). In 1981 the intermediate grades 63 (Choice) and 67 (Superb) were added. These were in keeping with what the terms had generally meant before the grading guide had come out. In 1987 there was pressure to add 64 (Select), but then the ANA just bit the bullet and adopted all 11 MS grades. I don't remember what adjectives were used for 61, 62, 66, 68 and 69, and they have pretty munch fallen by the wayside today. They might still be listed in the ANA Grading guide, I don't know.

It would seem that the labeling of many sellers is very different though. One sellers "choice BU" may really mean barely uncirculated and beaten up while another may label a 64-65 coin as "choice". I search for terms like gem and superb but take the results with a grain of salt usually. That said, there are some that are more accurate or at least close.

I've found it really means nothing. Many dealers just put that on a flip to attract people. BU could be anything from EF or XF to MS-100. Or possibly MS-250. Just one of those gimmicks used to fool people. Actually when I go to a coin show I barely look at what dealers claim for a grade. I just guess what a coin really is.
