I am curious. Why is the 1889 5 cent so pricey. Mintage figures are on the high end for this series at 1,200,000. So why is this date so valuable?

There is no such thing as an 1889 Half Dime, at least not in the US.

The US stopped producing " Half Dimes "in 1873.
In Canada there are no Half Dimes, they are known as 5 cents.

The mintage figure the OP cites matches the figure for the Canada 5 cent piece. I think this was originally posted in the correct forum, just misstated as a " Half Dime".

Until/unless the mods move this, can we clarify the question?

Remember, the mintage figure is just the amount they made. It doesn't tell you how many are still around today. Many have been melted down/lost over the years. Perhaps more so than some other dates based on the current list prices.
