I will venture a guess that another coin's reeded edge smacked into this coin.

The indent craters have the same space between them, which supports the theory that it was hit by the edge of another coin, (probably another silver dollar).

My personal opinion, don't look like it, impact will cause damage deep in to the coin, this appear to be in the surface.
