Just found this forum and wanted to say hello!
What brings me here are 3 heavy jars of pennies I recently discovered (that my parents had started collecting, a decade or two before my birth). These pennies are from Canada and the US, ranging from the 1940s to the early 2000s.
At first, I didn't think much of them; the impression I had was that "it's just copper so might as well deposit them all at the bank," until someone brought to my attention that some of the pennies could be worth more than their face value and worth holding on to.
So here I am, at the very beginning of my penny-sorting/appraising/selling journey. Looking forward to learning more from this forum!

Welcome brother... I'm just across the border in Michigan. I have also started the "Penny" collection from both countries. Canada stopped making the cent in 2012, so I figure they all became collectible at that point. It's just a matter of finding the higher quality coins. # things to keep in mind: How many did they make? How old are they? What is the condition (grading)

@sirguardian From a new member to another, Indeed, lots of things to consider depending on what your purpose for collecting them is. Another aspect about Canadian pennies from 1942-1996 that might appeal to some folks is that they were made of 98% copper. And in case it might interest you, I wrote a short post the other day on how I went about looking for errors among my 1997-2012 pennies: http://goccf.com/t/364627

If you in it for the money then it's a wasted life. If your in it to build a collection based on the art of it then you have a passion with great reward.

@sirguardian A combination of both can be fun too (as long as you're not expecting a fortune)
