Hi all, this is my first time posting on here. I have an old coin left to me and my brothers which our father is reported to have found in the lybian desert some time in the late 50's or early 60's while serving in the military. We know nothing about it and internet searches are not helping at all. Can anybody help identify it? TIA.

It could be from the Ptolemaic kingdom of Egypt. I haven't found an exact match, but there are some on Numista that look similar, like this one: https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces180797.html

The eagle design is different from the one in the link, but there are many varieties of this type of coins that were minted over a couple of hundred years for different Ptolemaios kings. Better pictures and if there are any inscriptions would help to attribute it more precisely.

Can you provide clearer pictures and size and weight of the coin. It does appear to be Ptolemaic but would need clearer pictures to say for sure.

I agree, it looks like a tetradrachm from Ptolemaic Egypt; discerning the ruler is difficult as they all read the same (PTOLEMAIOY BASILEOS = King Ptolemy), but there might be a year mark somewhere around the Eagle that could help, if you can get a clear picture.

Hi and thanks for the warm welcome and the response. I hope to get some better pictures in the new year although the coin is quite worn from it's time in the desert sand, I will post them as soon as I can. Cheers.
