Anybody out there hunting for stuff other than coins? I know I can probably hit up all the parks in the area and find coins but I'd rather find other items from the past. I just havn't had any luck. I got permission from my neighbor to search 6 acres of his property that he just had cleared. Theres nothing on the land, and until a few days ago it was wooded. All I have found are nails so far. Thoughts?Advice? Stories? Thanks.

Relic hunting requires research. Looking for old settlements or gathering places. Chances of finding anything n a random field are fairly small. I have researched a few places in my area looking at old maps and deeds at county hall but all the people I have contacted are either not interested in having metal detectors on their land or they already have people who detect on their land. For me parks and schools are easy. I have a few ghost towns located for rod trips but nothing in my immediate area.

We are right along a civil war route, in a heavily wooded area, so I am just *dying* to get a metal detector and go out there. Maybe once I get back home! The man who owns a huge chunk of land next to us would probably let us go over there, as well. Acres and acres to explore..

Anyway, Crash, nohope is right about the research. If you can find some older maps of your area - maybe some historic reading at the library which points to who or what may have been there or traveled through - you'd have a much better idea of where to start. Good luck.. and don't forget to take pictures of anything you may find!

You gotta remember, you can't find what wasn't lost. Farms and woods ain't gonna cut it unless there was a spot where people met and lost money, or hid it.

Old schools are pretty good for finds.
even newer (1950's) schools can really pay off.

Remember: Before the school was there something was on that spot.

I have found relics, Civil War buttons and Barber & Seated coinage at schools built in the 1950's!

Usually the schools are built on well traveled routes.

Good luck, and make your own luck: do some research about the area.

You bring up an interesting angle on detecting. In Europe and Asia, civilizations have been built on top of each other for thousanbds of years. You can find stuff in a field because it's likely that 500 years ago it was a town.

If you decide to buy a new Garrett, we ship to Spain. If you're getting a more expensive machine, it often pays to have the shipping and customs costs, rather than buying locally.
