Kamnaskires Pillar of the Community United States 7066 Posts	Posted 01/05/2020 09:47 am Reverse legend may include ΘP-AKΩN, which in turn might suggest that the ON that precedes it is from KOINON. But I don't know of a KOINON ΘPAKΩN followed, as we seem to have here, by ΠYO. Edit: although I didn't find a match I do see that there are issues from Philipopolis that include, on their reverses, both KOINON ΘPAKΩN and ΠYΘI. So it may well be ΠYΘI at lower right. Kamnaskires Pillar of the Community United States 7066 Posts	Posted 01/05/2020 11:00 am Did a search on "KOINON ΘPAKΩN ΠYΘI" and it led me to a text at academia.edu - THRAKIKA ZETEMATA II: ASPECTS OF THE ROMAN PROVINCE OF THRACE, edited by Maria - Gabriella G. Parissaki. More specifically, it led me to Ulrike Peter's essay "MÜNZEN MIT DER LEGENDE KOINON ΘPAKΩN" ("Coins with the legend KOINON ΘPAKΩN"). In that essay, which is in German, there are several references to AE's with the "KOINON ΘPAKΩN ΠYΘI" sequence - a variant, she says, of the longer legend "KOINON ΘPAKΩN AΛEZANΔPIA EN ΦIΛIΠΠOΠOΛI ΠYΘIA" and "KOINON ΘPAKΩN AΛEZANΔPIA ΠYΘIA EN ΦIΛIΠΠOΠOΛI." Might be worth a read if you want to invest the time. Keep the Google translator handy if you don't read German. But it does appear that the coin is perhaps an emission of Philippopolis within the Thracian KOINON. It might also be worthwhile to send an inquiry and jpeg to Ulrike Peter. It is indeed from Philippopolis (Thrace) from the reign of Caracalla from the year AD 212. She sent a file from Ivan Varbanov's The Coinage of Philippopolis showing 6 images of this coin. The obverse shows the bust of Caracalla and the legend: AY K M AYCEYAN TΩNEINOC The reverse shows a naked athlete with wreath and spear with the legend: KOINONΘP AKΩNΠYΘI Thanks for all of your help!
