I just dumped a box of cents and a box of nickels at a coinstar. This is awesome because they don't charge if I take an Amazon gift card (I spend over 5k a year on Amazon). My question is, how often do they empty these machines? Also, how much of one denomination do they hold? I used to dump at a credit Union and their machines only fit two boxes of any denomination before it would be full and have to be emptied. I'm worried about filling a coinstar and getting stuck with coins.

I've dumped large amounts ($150+) of Lincoln Cents into my local Coinstar machine. I never even considered the idea of it becoming full.
Check out my counterstamped Lincoln Cent collection:

Thanks chafemasterj, that's 6 boxes so already more than I expected. I'm still interested to know if anyone knows how often they are emptied.

In my area the coinstars are emptied every three weeks regardless of whether or not they are "full".

All of the coins dumped into a coinstar go into a single bin. Obviously, the rejects do not go inside the bin because they go into the reject tray. The "full" bin is removed and swapped for an empty bin. The bin containing coins is taken to Loomis, Brinks, Garda, etc for sorting and re-rolling, then re-distribution as orders are received from banks.

This info is direct from a Loomis person who I chatted with as he was swapping out the bin that is held inside every coinstar machine, so this info is reliable.

Berto, thanks for the valuable info! It's super helpful and now I'm not so worried. I'll be dumping two boxes of nickels at a time.

Yeah I saw them change it once. It doesn't sort into bags it's like a 20 or 30 gallon size bin to hold about 500 pounds I was told the machine program monitors the weight and alerts coinstar when it's close to 500 pounds so they can come out and empty it to limit downtime of the kiosk.

Depends on how active the machine ism could be 1 week, 2 weeks a month or more before they change it. But they figure nobody is walking into a store with much more than 50 pounds of coin at a time to turn in. Just too heavy although I have seen them out of service my guess is waiting to be emptied.

It's too bad Amazon won't let you buy coins and silver with giftcards... I'd be taking the gift cards if they did.

Be sure to not put any Ike's in Coinstar as they will get dumped into a garbage box inside the machine and not the reject tray. Meaning, you don't get the $1 credit for an Ike. After several trips, I started to second guess that my Ike's were getting counted so I tested on my last trip with a known amount of various dollar coins. Once I put the Ike's in, things got really loud with all kinds of grinding and clunking noises. I had the front desk lady open the machine and we found my 5 Ikes in a side bin inside the machine. It was everything I ever imagined with the noises that machine was making... these things got beat up pretty good.
