Silver101 Pillar of the Community Canada 1081 Posts	Posted 01/11/2020 08:10 am In the two years since I've got back into collecting coins I've thought a great deal about grade, value and what interests me. One of the most interesting things I've learned is that it's often better to collect a 'problem free', 'best in grade' coin than to simply seek high grade. A coin that I saw recently illustrated perfectly what this means. The coin was a key date Newfoundland 20 cent graded VF-20 by the ICCS. That's a fairly high grade as these coins are scarce. The obverse looked pretty good - some detail in the braids, ear and hair lines etc, but the reverse was mostly illegible. I asked the guy selling it and he confirmed that the grade was legit, particularly based on objective factors like the state of the coin's surface. IT just happened to be a weak strike and so maybe the reverse was never all that legible? That really crystallized things for me. Obviously I gravitate towards coins that are in the best shape possible which usually means that a higher grade is better than a lower grade. But I would rather have a VG-10 with a strong strike than a VF-20 with such a weak one. I don't buy any coin if I can read it, preferably without a magnifying glass.... I've found out many types of coins are simply just out of reach and Albums for those will always have empty spots. An example for me is the Sitting Liberty Dime. Most of those are available but many are just out of reach. Also, I hate Albums with slots at the end made for no coins at all so I avoid those. Report this Post to the Staff

I just buy what I like, and what I can sell without being too upside down in it. I also like buying low grade Connecticut coppers. They are a blast to attribute, and easy to sell.
